Why buy a wooden cutting board?
Uulki has a passion for wood. We believe that wooden kitchenware has more to offer than kitchenware made from plastic or other synthetic materials, because it’s a natural, renewable resource. No need to say that the wood has to be from sustainable origin. We only use European wood from sustainably managed forests. Also, chances are that, once you have worked with wood in your kitchen, you won’t want anything else. But did you also know that wood has antibacterial properties by nature? That’s why working with wooden chopping boards is hygienic, as long as you maintain it well. In our tips page you can read more about good cleaning practices for wooden cutting boards.
Eco-friendly wooden chopping board made in Europe
Uulki cutting boards are made in Europe from wood from sustainably managed European forests. In this way, we also keep the transport kilometers between the harvest and productiion site low.
Beech wood: hard wood, soft for your knives
Beech wood is a hard wood. As a result, it’s soft for your knives. Hard wood chopping boards are much better for knives than for example cutting boards made from glass. The latter is too hard, as a result of which knives get dull soon. A cutting board made from synthetic material on the other hand is too soft, as a result of which a knife will make deep grooves in the board, which is a hotbed for bacteria. Wood, and especially beech, will bend a little bit as a reaction against knife carving, but will bend back to its original position. This protects your knives and your cutting board against deep carving grooves.

Using a wooden chopping board for the first time
It’s a good idea to treat your chopping board with wood oil before the first use, but you could also decide to use it like this, and give it a first treatment when the wood starts to become dry. Some customers only use Uulki Pure wood oil, others only use Uulki Pure wood wax (oil & wax 2-in-1). The oil nourishes the wood pores deeply and protects against bending and cracking of the wood. The wax protects the outside and makes it water repellant. Both products are complementary, so for a very complete protection, we recommend that you first use the oil, followed by the wax.
